Perhaps there's a bogus official operating in your area that the Police want to warn you about - or the Police may be desperate for your help in tracking down a vehicle used in a serious crime.

The Trading Standards Office have brought the following scam to a partner agency's attention:
A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact them on 0906 6611911 (a premium rate number). DO NOT call this number as this is a mail scam originating from Belize.

There have been a number of residential burglaries recently in Kingston Hill and Coombe Vale where we have had reports of properties being broken into, having been left insecure.
Please! Can you ensure your doors and windows are left secure at all times.
Recent press reports have suggested that Kingston Police will no longer prioritise Burglaries - This could not be further from the truth - Police will continue to provide a 999 response to calls relating to Burglary where there is any risk to the victim or the suspect is present or nearby.
Every other call will be assessed on its merits and where there is no risk or indeed suspect nearby a forensic officer will be tasked with attending.
The collection of forensic evidence is the most effective way of bringing criminals to justice, it is hoped that this new system will provide a better service to victims of crime and increase the capture of forensic evidence therefore increasing the numbers of criminals convicted.
Responsibility for the investigation of the Burglary will remain with Kingstons dedicated Burglary Robbery and Investigation Team who are recognised as one of the best in London
Kingston Police will open its gates to the public between 11am - 3pm on Saturday 9th September 2006 as part of the national Heritage Open event co-ordinated by the Civic Trust.

Refreshments will be provided on the day, and we will also have recruitment Bus/personnel on hand to offer advice on career/volunteer opportunities available within the Metropolitan Police Service.
Over the weekend there have been two incidents of Distraction Burglary in Chessington where the suspects purported to be from the Water board.
Always check identification, never accept any excuses for not having one and do not let them in if they cannot produce one.
If you are unsure about their validity phone your water supplier but never use the number they offer, close the door whilst doing this. If you are unable to verify their identity ask them to make a appointment by post.
These people prey on the vulnerable, if you have elderly residents in your road and see people who appear to be cold calling them please be good neighbours and ask them if everything is OK.
If you are concerned over people calling door to door please phone your Safer Neighbourhood Team 0208 721 2001 or Kingston Police 0208 541 1212 and ask for the Control Room.

You may receive a card through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) saying that they have a parcel awaiting delivery instructions.
Please be aware you will be asked to contact them on 0906 6611911. We advise that you DO NOT call the number, as this is a premium phone scam originating from Belize.

In light of the changes today regarding the use of Chip and Pin
Never write down your PIN and never disclose it to anyone, even if they claim to be from your card issuer or the Police. Carefully discard receipts from card transactions and other personal information - shred them if possible
When using a cash machine,be wary of anyone who might be trying to watch you enter your PIN and do not allow yourself to be distracted by anyone trying to talk to you. Use your hand or body as a shield when entering your PIN so others cannot see it.

Unfortunately Satellite Navigation systems are a popular target for thieves. For those who do not have the system built in please remove the system from its holder. We advise that the holder, including the suction cups are removed as their presence could advertise to thieves that a system may be in the car. Always remember not to leave anything of value in your car - leave nothing in view as thieves will steal anything !
Unfortunately pedal cycles are an easy target for criminals. When leaving your pedal cycle unattended can you ensure that is is locked, even if you are leaving it for a few minutes. Whenever possible you should lock your pedal cycle to something solid. Police recover thousands of pedal cycles a year but most are not reunited with the owners as details such as frame numbers and where they are on the pedal cycle has not been noted by the owner.

We all know that much of the post we receive is junk mail.
Some of this junk mail may tempt you, particulary those advertising big money prizes. However, we would advise that you do not reply to any such letters with your personal or financial details - throw the letter in the bin unless you are 100 % certain of the validity of the offer.
Don't become a victim of identity theft.
Many people take a great deal of trouble securing their house whilst at the same time leaving property in a shed which is either unlocked or so old and run down as to prove no obstacle to a thief.
Fit a good lock or padlock to your shed and consider a low cost, battery operated shed alarm on the door. Also postcode all property such as lawnmowers, hedge trimmers and garden furniture. Never leave ladders lying along the back or side of your property, put them away and lock them up, they can be used to gain access to your house.
Chessington Safer Neighbourhoods are holding a Public Meeting Saturday 10th December 2005 at 10am. This will be held at The Kings Centre Coppard Gardens Chessington and is an opportunity to meet your local Police team and raise any concerns you have with them.
Supermarket car parks in New Malden are being targeted regarding motor vehicle crime. Please make sure you always lock your vehicle even when you return your shopping trolley back to the store. Ensure no valuables are on view especially handbags
This advice applies to every car park you use as car crime is opportunistic and thieves will take anything left on view.
In this recent week burglaries have been reported in the New Malden and Surbiton areas. These burglaries have occurred during the day where residents have left their windows and doors insecure.
Please remember to lock your windows and doors even if leaving your property for a short period of time, even small windows left open enable burglars to reach through to open the larger window.
A Local Phone Directory is in the process of being delivered in Kingston Borough. If you see that a neighbour has had a delivery and it is lying against the door or sticking out of their letterbox please push it through or take it in for them. Generally any such deliveries or packages left in plain sight if the same could be done as a matter of course as it may give an indication that the premises are empty.
General safety tips for you and your vehicle.
Always:
Lock the doors to your home when you leave, even if it’s just for a short period of time. -Close the windows and sunroof, lock the doors and activate any security devices when leaving your car unattended. -Park with care, particularly at night or if you are leaving the vehicle for a long time. If possible, park in a busy, well-lit area.
Never:
Never carry large sums of money, take only what you need or use a credit card or debit card. -Only carry the credit cards you intend to use, don’t carry credit cards you do not need, -Never give out personal information to strangers, especially PIN numbers. -Never fight if your property is taken, there is nothing worth getting hurt for. -Never leave cash, credit cards, cheque book, mobile phones, vehicle documents or other valuables in the car. -If you must leave valuables in your vehicle ensure they are hidden well out of sight.
Keys - keep them safe
Never leave them in the car, even for a second - treat them as you would your cash and credit cards. -Make sure they are kept in a secure place at home and at work - burglars have been known to break into houses and offices to steal car keys.
Please be aware of a white Toyota van which has been seen in the New Malden area. The driver called at an address and demanded payment for work which had not been carried out. If this occurs to you please contact Police. In another instance he claimed to have spoken to a neighbour, that work was needed on the residents roof and that he would do it.
We advise that when people come to your door offering to do work on your property politely say no - passing strangers are not the people to carry this work out for you.
If you have elderly neighbours and are aware of these type of callers please keep a friendly eye on them and inform Police if there is any chance they are being taken advantage of.
Today 21st September 2005, Kingston Police are conducting a Vehicle Crime Crackdown. There are officers in uniform and plain clothes at areas where car crime occurs. If you have any information regarding this or any other crime please contact Kingston Police on 0208 541 1212.

On Wednesday 5th October 2005 a resident in the Lower Ham Road area refused entry to a man purporting to be there to read the electric meter. The resident asked all the right questions and as the male was unable to answer them he was refused entry.
If you have an unexpected caller please put the chain on the door before answering. If they claim to be from service providers or even the Police always ask for identification. If you are not convinced phone who they claim to represent, do not use a number they give you as it may be false and close the door whilst doing so. If you are still uncertain ask for them to write for an appointment - if they are genuine they should not mind.
A genuine caller will wait whilst you confirm their identity and always remember a smart suit in no way makes them genuine. If you have any doubts - keep them out.
